Bring Your Cousins

Already have a family tree — on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FamilySearch, or in a program on your computer? Bring the file. We'll count your people and check every parent-to-child link, labelling each one proved, documented, index only, or family story. Free — and we don't keep the file.

Up to 4 MB to check here — a file over that: export it again without media, or send it to us and we'll load it. We read the file to write your report and then throw it away — it is never saved on our side. Close this page and the report is gone; bring the file back any time. (Loading a tree onto your own family site works the same way — Admin's uploader has the same 4 MB limit.)

How do I get my file?

Every family-tree website and program can save your tree as a file ending in .ged (a “GEDCOM”). That's the one we need.

From Ancestry
  1. Open your tree, then Tree Settings (under the tree name).
  2. On the right, choose Export tree. Wait a moment for the green button.
  3. Tap Download your GEDCOM file. It lands in your Downloads folder.
From MyHeritage
  1. Open Family tree → Manage trees.
  2. Next to your tree choose Export to GEDCOM, then download the file.
From FamilySearch

FamilySearch doesn't export the shared tree directly. Use a free program such as RootsMagic Essentials or Ancestral Quest to download your branch, then save it as a .ged file from there.

From a program on your computer (Family Tree Maker, RootsMagic, Gramps…)

Look in the File menu for Export and pick GEDCOM.
